Branching Out: Schools Take Learning to the Great Outdoors

Research consistently shows that outdoor education can significantly boost students’ ability to focus once they return to the classroom. Even simple design choices—like incorporating natural light, indoor plants, and organic materials—can support cognitive development and promote overall student well-being. 

In the latest issue of Texas Lone Star, the official magazine of the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), Round Rock ISD’s Redbud Elementary School, Alief ISD’s Jefferson Early Learning Center, and Melissa Turnbaugh are spotlighted for their innovative use of nature in educational settings. The article explores how Texas districts are embracing outdoor learning to enrich academic experiences in subjects like science, math, and ecology—while also delivering proven physical and mental health benefits. 

By intentionally weaving nature into both outdoor and indoor environments, these schools are redefining what it means to create spaces where students can thrive.
