Modernizing a Championship Venue for the Future of Nebraska Athletics

The University of Nebraska Devaney Center renovation is a cornerstone project within the Athletic Comprehensive Roadmap developed by PBK. The venue supports Nebraska volleyball, swim and dive, track and field, and other athletic programs, serving as a critical asset in the university’s continued success within the Big Ten Conference. 

The renovation reflects Nebraska Athletics’ commitment to providing championship caliber facilities that strengthen recruiting, enhance the student athlete experience, and support long-term program growth. 

Reimagining John Cook Arena

At the center of the project is a comprehensive modernization and reseat of John Cook Arena, home to one of the most successful and nationally recognized volleyball programs in collegiate athletics. The seating bowl is being reconfigured to respond to the extraordinary demand for Nebraska Volleyball while creating a more dynamic and engaging fan experience. 

The design removes select overbuild conditions, optimizes seating capacity, improves sightlines, enhances ADA accessibility, and introduces new premium seating options and club spaces. These improvements create a more intimate and energetic game day atmosphere while generating new revenue opportunities that support the long-term goals of Nebraska Athletics.

Enhancing the Student Athlete Experience

A key focus of the renovation is the continued investment in student athlete development, wellness, and performance. The women’s volleyball suite is being expanded to provide a modern collection of spaces that support every aspect of the athlete experience. 

New amenities include a dedicated player lounge, film room, beauty bar, and advanced recovery space, along with upgraded locker rooms and enhanced coaching areas designed to improve collaboration and operational efficiency. These spaces provide athletes with an environment that reflects the national prominence of Nebraska Volleyball while supporting recruiting and retention in an increasingly competitive collegiate landscape.

A New Era for a Historic Venue

The Devaney Center and John Cook Arena renovation builds upon the legacy of one of college athletics’ most iconic venues while preparing it for the future. Through strategic planning, innovative sports facility design, and a deep understanding of the collegiate athlete and fan experience, the project creates a modern championship environment to support Nebraska’s Athletic vision. Further, it demonstrates how thoughtful venue modernization can enhance performance, increase revenue opportunities, and strengthen a program’s competitive advantage on a national stage.
