Southern University of Science and Technology is a new and innovative university located in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. It was established in 2012. In order to achieve the international first-class strategic goal, the university has conducted international public bidding for the four core colleges in the design stage – science school, business school, public teaching building, engineering school, and the core internal public space of the academic exchange center. PBK stood out from the competition of several international top design companies and won the first place.

The PBK team redefines each public space by combining existing building spaces. The team added architectural features suitable for contemporary higher education concepts, such as small cafes, I-BARs, outdoor rest platforms, and small collaborative spaces (HuddleRoom). At the same time of enriching public space, the design provides a small place for reception, rest, and discussion at any time for each college, enhances the staying of public space, and guides students to change the traditional learning model that depends on the classroom. The design also uses various design methods to integrate the professional characteristics and logos of different colleges into public spaces organically. With sustainable materials and theme colors, it increases comfort while improving the public space of the College of Science and the sub-halls of each major. Recognition and modernity increase professional identity and pride for teachers and students. At the same time, on the basis of highlighting the atmospheric quality of Nanke, modern architectural design techniques and international advanced materials and instruments are used to effectively improve the quality of teaching.
