A New Chapter for an Existing Building

When Pflugerville Independent School District needed additional space to support its evolving needs, the district looked beyond traditional new construction. An underutilized former grocery store presented an opportunity to think creatively about what was already available.

Working with PBK, the district transformed the 56,000-square-foot building, which had most recently been used as a church, into the Pflugerville ISD Learning & Technology Center. The adaptive reuse project creates a new home for professional development, district departments, technology services, and collaboration while making thoughtful use of an existing community asset.

Seeing Potential in an Unconventional Opportunity

The building’s previous uses presented a unique design challenge. Its large footprint and existing infrastructure offered possibilities, but the interior needed to be completely reimagined around the needs of a modern school district.

PBK worked closely with district leaders, educators, and departmental representatives to develop a vision centered on flexibility, collaboration, and future-ready infrastructure. New windows bring natural light deeper into the building, while demountable glass partitions allow spaces to adapt as the district’s needs change.

What was once a retail and worship space now feels purpose-built for the people who work there. Contemporary finishes, open work areas, collaborative spaces, and thoughtful gathering areas create a professional and welcoming environment for district staff.

Supporting the People Behind Student Success

At the heart of the center is a flexible professional development hub designed to bring educators together. Six adjoining rooms can operate independently for smaller sessions or open into a larger training environment, with integrated audiovisual technology supporting a range of programs and events. A dedicated mock classroom provides space for hands-on teaching simulations and professional learning.

The center also brings several essential district departments together, including Curriculum and Instruction, Special Education, Information Services, Counseling, and others. A new home for the district’s technology department includes a robust data center with generator backup, strengthening the district’s ability to maintain critical operations.

Together, these spaces create an environment where district staff can learn, collaborate, and do the work that supports students across Pflugerville ISD.

Making the Most of What Already Exists

The Learning & Technology Center demonstrates how adaptive reuse can become a strategic solution for a school district with changing needs and limited resources.

Rather than starting with a blank slate, Pflugerville ISD recognized the potential in an existing building and worked with PBK to give it an entirely new purpose. The result is a flexible, future-ready facility that supports the district today while providing room to adapt for what comes next.

The building has taken on several lives over the years. Its latest transformation gives it a lasting role in supporting the people, programs, and students of Pflugerville ISD.
