Integrated Education Center

The new Integrated Education Center combines diverse educational programs in a flexible, sustainable, and welcoming environment to foster academic transitions and create a learning-centered community.

Client: South Seattle College
Market: Higher Education
Location: Seattle, Washington

The new Integrated Education Center combines classroom and lab space for the Health Care Programs, Adult Basic Education, and ESL programs as well as a supporting faculty suite. The integration of Health Care Programs and Basic Skills provides a distinct opportunity to represent the linkages between these two instructional areas and provide an environment for academic professional transitions and relationships. The IEC will provide an atmosphere that is welcoming, conducive to learning in many modes, and a desirable place to engage students.

The project incorporates several sustainable features including generous amounts of controlled daylight, low flow fixtures, and many materials that are recycled, rapidly renewable, and will contribute to making better use of natural resources. Flexibility is addressed through the use of a regular structural module, a variety of space sizes and types, and the use of technology and furniture in progressive ways that capitalize on mobility and adaptability. The goal is to create a learning-centered community within the new building that influences other buildings and areas of campus.
