Creating a Village for Learning

Opening a new high school is about more than welcoming a new class of students—it is about creating a place where a community can grow for generations. At Gene Tomas High School, Lamar CISD envisioned a campus that would do more than accommodate rapid enrollment growth. The district sought to create an environment where every student feels known, supported, and empowered to pursue a future that is uniquely their own. 

That vision inspired a campus organized around the idea of a village. Rather than experiencing a large comprehensive high school as a collection of disconnected departments, students belong to smaller learning communities that foster meaningful relationships with peers, teachers, and staff. These neighborhoods create a sense of familiarity within a growing campus, helping students build confidence and connection as they navigate their high school years. 

At the heart of the school, shared gathering spaces bring those communities together. The library, dining commons, collaboration areas, and student-centered learning environments create opportunities to study, socialize, and connect throughout the day. Flexible spaces support everything from individual reflection to group projects and large gatherings, allowing learning to extend well beyond the traditional classroom. Every space was designed to encourage interaction, collaboration, and a strong sense of belonging.

Visualizing the Future

Preparing students for life after graduation is equally central to the campus experience. Career and Technical Education programs are integrated throughout the school and designed with transparency in mind, allowing students to see learning in action as they move through the building. Whether exploring engineering, health science, culinary arts, business, agriculture, or other career pathways, students are encouraged to discover new interests and envision possibilities they may not have previously considered. By making these opportunities visible and accessible, the campus reinforces that every pathway—college, career, military service, or workforce entry—is valued. 

The design also embraces flexibility, recognizing that education continues to evolve. Collaborative learning areas, adaptable classrooms, and technology-rich environments support a variety of instructional approaches while giving students greater choice in how they engage with learning. Natural daylight, views to outdoor spaces, and welcoming interior environments contribute to student wellness, creating spaces that promote focus, creativity, and connection throughout the school day. 

A Community Destination

Just as importantly, Gene Tomas High School was designed to serve as a destination for the broader Lamar CISD community. Athletics, performing arts, and shared gathering spaces welcome families, alumni, and community members, ensuring the campus remains active long after the school day ends. The result is a school that functions not only as a place for education, but also as a civic hub where relationships are strengthened and community pride continues to grow. 

Gene Tomas High School demonstrates that the most successful schools are measured not only by the spaces they provide, but by the communities they cultivate. By organizing a large campus around human-scale learning communities, celebrating diverse pathways to success, and creating environments where students feel seen and supported, the school lays the foundation for lifelong learning, meaningful connections, and futures filled with possibility.
