Fife High School STEAM Center of Innovation

The Fife High School STEAM Center of Innovation is a transformative 31,000-square-foot facility designed to foster interdisciplinary learning and modern educational practices.

Client: Fife School District
Market: K-12 Education
Location: Fife, Washington

The new STEAM Center of Innovation was included in the District’s capital facilities bond which was approved by voters in February of 2018.

Replacing outdated art and science spaces, as well as temporary classrooms, the center brings together diverse programs—Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math—into a cohesive environment that encourages collaboration and creativity.

Within its three stories, the center houses 11 specialized teaching stations, including science labs, a robotics lab, an art studio, a video production studio, and a business lab. These facilities are complemented by shared activity areas that promote cross-curricular instruction and social interaction, aligning with the district’s emphasis on Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Creativity.

Architecturally, the building features exposed structural elements and a limited material palette, reflecting the Pacific Northwest’s character while symbolizing the transparency of the learning process. Natural light permeates the double-height spaces, creating inviting areas for student engagement and connection. The design also includes a central mechanical plant intended to serve the entire campus, demonstrating a forward-thinking approach to infrastructure.

Recognized with Learning by Design’s Outstanding Project Award, the STEAM Center stands as a testament to innovative educational design and the Fife School District’s commitment to providing students with dynamic, hands-on learning experiences.
