Building the Future of the Skilled Trades

Across Texas, demand for skilled construction professionals continues to grow, creating opportunities for careers that are both financially rewarding and essential to the state’s future. At Texas State Technical College (TSTC), preparing students for those careers has long been part of its mission. The Construction Technologies Center was designed to take that mission a step further—not simply by providing new classrooms and labs, but by elevating how construction education is experienced, celebrated, and seen by students, industry partners, and the community. 

Positioned prominently along the I-35 corridor in Waco, the facility serves as a visible statement about the value of the skilled trades. Its contemporary design gives construction education the same level of presence and pride traditionally associated with academic or corporate buildings, reinforcing that careers in the trades are innovative, technology-driven, and critical to Texas’ continued growth. 

Designed for Visibility and Connection

Inside, the building was designed around transparency and connection. Two expansive laboratory wings are linked by a central lobby that serves as the heart of the facility, while classrooms, collaboration areas, offices, and student spaces create seamless connections between hands-on instruction and academic learning. Open sightlines throughout the building allow students to see learning in action across multiple disciplines, reinforcing the collaborative nature of the construction industry and encouraging exploration beyond a single trade. 

Experiential Spaces + Collaborative Atmosphere

The learning environments themselves reflect the evolving nature of the profession. Purpose-built laboratories support Building Construction, Electrical and Solar Energy Construction, HVAC, Plumbing, and Pipefitting Technology through immersive, hands-on experiences that mirror real-world job sites. Flexible classrooms, collaboration spaces, and informal gathering areas provide students with opportunities to work independently, solve problems as teams, and interact with faculty in ways that extend learning beyond the lab. Every space was intentionally designed to support TSTC’s Performance-Based Education model, allowing students to master skills at their own pace while preparing for the demands of today’s workforce. 

Just as importantly, the building was designed to evolve alongside the industry it serves. Adaptable laboratory infrastructure—including overhead power distribution, bus bars, and compressed gas systems—allows equipment and teaching environments to be reconfigured as technologies change. Durable materials, tilt-up concrete construction, and energy-efficient electrochromic glazing reduce long-term operating costs while creating comfortable, daylight-filled spaces that support student wellbeing and focus. 

Throughout the facility, daylight, transparency, and thoughtfully designed student spaces foster a welcoming campus experience. Collaboration zones, lounges, outdoor gathering areas, and informal study spaces—often referred to as “sticky spaces”—encourage students to remain on campus between classes, build relationships with peers and faculty, and develop the collaborative skills that define successful careers in construction.
